Description
The Family Allowance in Quebec is a financial assistance program for eligible families with dependent children under the age of 18. It provides non-taxable benefits to support families, and no application is required for parents to receive payments when a child is born in Quebec.

Eligibility Criteria
In certain other situations, an individual must file an Application for Family Allowance if:
- he or she adopts a child;
- he or she is an immigrant or becomes a resident of Québec;
- his or her child arrives in or returns to Québec;
- he or she lives in Québec, but his or her child was born outside Québec;
- he or she obtains custody of a child;
- he or she shares custody of a child;
- he or she retains custody of a child following a separation and he or she is not already receiving Family Allowance payments in his or her name;
- Retraite Québec requires an application to be filed.
Application Process
If your child was born in Quebec after December 31, 2006, you don’t need to apply. Your child is automatically signed up for this program when the birth is declared to the Directeur de l’état civil.
You must file an Application for Family Allowance if:
- you adopt a child
- you are an immigrant or become a resident of Québec
- your child arrives in or returns to Québec
- you live in Québec but your child was born outside Québec
- you obtain custody of a child
- you obtain shared custody of a child
- you retain custody of a child following the breakdown of your union and you were not previously receiving the Family Allowance payments in your name.
