Income Support Alberta

Description

Income Support provides financial assistance to Albertans who are unemployed or underemployed and need help meeting basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and transportation. It is designed for people who are either:

  • Expected to Work (ETW), or
  • Have Barriers to Full Employment (BFE)

Eligibility Criteria

You must meet all of the following:

  • Age & Residency:
    • 18 years or older
    • Live in Alberta
    • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or refugee claimant
  • Financial Need:
    • Low or no income
    • Limited assets
  • Employment Status:
    • Either actively looking for work (ETW), or
    • Have a barrier to full employment (e.g., health, caregiving, education)

Application Process

Apply online via Alberta Supports, or in person at an Alberta Supports Centre.

Provide:

  • Identification
  • Proof of income and assets
  • Housing and utility costs
  • Employment or medical documentation (if applicable)

Possible Outcomes & Appeal Process

If your application is denied or your benefits are changed:

  • Request a Review: Contact your caseworker or Alberta Supports.
  • Appeals Secretariat:
    • File a formal appeal within the deadline (usually 30 days).
    • Attend a hearing if needed.
    • A decision will be issued by the Income and Employment Supports appeal panel
