Description
Student Aid NL is Newfoundland and Labrador’s integrated student financial assistance program. It combines federal (Canada Student Loans & Grants) and provincial (NL Student Loans & Grants, Debt Reduction & Tuition Relief) funding into a single application processed through the StudentAidNL portal. Its goal is to help students pay for post-secondary education—loans must be repaid, while grants do not.
Benefit Amount
Varies.
Eligibility Criteria
You must meet all of the following:
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person, or registered Indian.
- Reside in NL and have a valid SIN.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- Pass credit check (if first-time federal applicant aged 22+).
- Not be in default on previous student loans.
- Be enrolled full-time (60%+ course load) or part-time (20–59%), in a program ≥ 12 weeks at a designated post-secondary institution.
Application Process
- Start with the StudentAidNL Portal
- Visit the official Student Aid NL website managed by the NL government
- Create or Sign into Your Account
- Register for a new StudentAidNL account or log in if you already have one
- Through this account, you’ll apply once to be assessed for both federal and provincial student financial assistance
- Complete the Online Application
- Provide details about your study program, school, income, and expenses
- Be thorough and accurate—it determines eligibility for loans and grants
- Submit the Income Confirmation Form (ICF)
- The ICF confirms your current financial information
- You must submit it within eight weeks of the start of your classes—or you risk losing your upfront provincial grant and other aid
- Sign the MSFAA (Master Student Financial Assistance Agreement)
- This is a one-time lifetime agreement with the NSLSC (National Student Loans Service Centre), unless you move provinces or break your studies for over two years
- After applying, you’ll receive the MSFAA by mail. Complete, sign, and return it to the NSLSC
- Confirm Your Enrollment
- Log in to your NSLSC account to confirm enrollment once classes start—without this step, funds won’t be released
- Wait for the Notice of Assessment
- Within about 10 business days after submitting your online application, you’ll receive a Notice of Assessment. If you applied by paper, it takes ~20 business days
- Follow the instructions included in the notice, then funds are released (typically at the semester’s start: September or January)
- Receive Your Funding
- Federal and provincial loans & grants will be deposited to your student bank account after enrollment is confirmed by your school.
- The NSLSC handles the loan side, and Student Aid NL administers the NL-specific programs.
